Interesting stuff! I have been looking for something for a friend of mine, who has just bought a border collie puppy and she doesn’t really know what to do with him and how to teach him right from wrong. I can’t believe she bought him without doing research, but he is really cute, so I understand why she was sucked in! So I’m going to recommend this to her, it sounds like it will give her some good structure.
It will definitely help. The sooner she starts training the better especially with a border collie. They are a very intelligent breed and they need a lot of stimulation. These dogs are used for herding so they are a very active dog. If your friend does not have a farm and some sheep to herd I would suggest she start agility training with her dog after it has learned some basic obedience. Tired dogs tend not to get into too much trouble!

Well this book has been on the market for quite some time. I purchased it when it was called Kingdom of Pets. What impresses me about it is over time training methods have changed and this book has been updated many times to reflect those changes.
Great work on your website! I really appreciate this article of training dogs and the whole bit, because I think that this is something everyone with a dog needs to know. Especially the part about a dog being a life long partner and not something you bring home, and after a few days, decide you don’t want it then get rid of it. How sad it is to treat a dog this way. We adopted a Terrier mix and right from the start, we could tell that she didn’t trust anyone because she wouldn’t allow us to pet her. Have you ever experienced this before? Thanks Retha. We never experienced a dog with trust issues. The dog we have now we adopted from the shelter at 7 months old. She had been adopted previous and after 3 months the fellow brought her back. He claimed she was using the house as a toilet and she barked all day. We brought her home and she certainly was wild. What she needed was a lot of exercise to calm her down. We had a doberman then and the two of them would play non stop in the back yard. She eventually did calm down. She messed in the house twice and it was my fault I just did not understand what she was trying to tell me. The reason she barked all day for her previous owner was because she was outside on a chain all day. She has turned out to be a great pet who my husband and I love very much.
Is this program specific to only puppies or younger dogs still learning? It would be nice to see something that covers training and obedience from all ages and personality types of dogs because they’re all so different. I like how it has the free starter version and then other options that aren’t terribly expensive. I’ve heard those puppy classes at formal places can just be too much money.
This program is not just for puppies or younger dogs just learning. It covers issues like understanding what your dog behaviour means, how to deal with certain behavioural problems such as aggression, chewing, jumping etc. It also offers you ways to deal with separation anxiety, two dogs living together, cat and dog living together etc.. So this program covers much more than just training a puppy. As far as how expensive puppy classes are depends I guess on your perspective of what you are getting for what you are putting out.

Thanks for your comments Nemira. It is so true they can really get you with that oh so innocent expression. The face tells it all. The dog we have now we got from the shelter and the reason we took her was because I just fell in love with that cute innocent face online.
Can the methods in this product be used for a dog over the age of ten that has issues with excessive barking? We have a long haired chihuahua that barks whenever he sees someone other than a family member. We have tried those bark collars and the ones that go off in the room when the dog barks but nothing seems to work.

How long does it take for a dog to become fully housebroken? I heard 3 months, not sure if that is by average or so.

Hi Angel Make sure your puppy has lots of suitable chew toys while he is teething. If you catch him chewing something you do not want him chewing like your shoes tell him no and redirect him to an appropriate chew toy. As far as housebreaking it really depends on how vigilante and consistent you are. A 3 month old puppy can generally hold it for up to 3 hours under ideal condition. I wouldn’t expect your puppy to be fully housebroken until 5 to 6 months.

I honestly believe any dog is trainable so long as the owner shows respect and patience. I have to say though, sometimes my little toy Australian Shepherd likes to keep me on my toes!

Yes I agree with you Cory – any dog is trainable to a certain degree. Just like people some dogs are smarter than others. The biggest factor though in training a dog is who is doing the training. Training a dog does take a lot of patience because they will try and challenge you for the alpha role.
My little chihuahua is very greedy and is obsessed (and I mean really obsessed) with food. She spends all her time hoovering up crumbs from the floor and even if she is asleep, when she hears a rustle or the fridge door open she is there straight away. When we have guests we have to put her in another room as she won’t leave people alone (she knows who to target as well – very clever). What do you suggest?
Hi Holly sounds like you have a little dog with a big appetite. Seriously though does she have any health issues? Is she just begging or is she food guarding with her bowl? If she is just begging and looking for more food I think I would try training her to go to a place like a mat on the floor while you are eating. So basically you will be training her to lie down and stay. Of course for all her hard work you should award her with her favourite treat or toy. Something tells me though your little girl is motivated more by food. Anytime when you feed her you should make her wait before she dives into her dish. She needs to learn who’s in charge and you can do it through the food. This will not happen overnight. It will take time and patience. Good luck! Funny how they know who to target when begging for food at the table. It is like they see a person with sucker written on their forehead.

Dogs are cute when little but when they grow up, a lot mistakes can be made.
The advice from experienced trainer would be helpful all time. The dog has own character and sometimes they want to take over control from owner.

Dog training is an interesting topic for sure for dog owners, my dogs have always been very well behaved training them on my own with little problems with any of the dogs I ever owned.
My parents on the other hand need to send their dogs to a professional trainer, my parents are owned by their dogs. My parents give in to their dogs every command, dogs are smart and will be the alpha dog if the opportunity is there.
It sounds like your parents need to become the alphas of their pack. It is surprising how easy it can be if you know how. Simple things like going through a door before your dog or going up or down stairs ahead of your dog will make a big difference.
